The Hub of the North
Known as “The Hub of the North,” Thompson functions as the centre for commerce, educa- tion, government, transportation, health and retail for Northern Manitoba, servicing a market of over 60,000 in outlying communi- ties. Thompson was founded in 1957 in response to a major nickel discovery. Today, Vale Inco Ltd.’s integrated nickel mine is one of the world’s largest, producing over a million pounds of pure nickel per year. While local industry still consists of mining, an influx of investments, new developments and businesses have become established in the community since 2005. A major hydro dam development and improved trans- portation to the Arctic are on the horizon, further securing a positive financial outlook for the city.
