NICA Update
What’s New with NICA? Today we are faced with many issues, from Labor issues, to retaining locations
with Fairs our concessionaires have worked at for many years, to what is an ac- ceptable way of selling your business. Independent Concessionaires are faced with so much more than just showing up
on set up day, checking in and getting ready for the Fair. Today, we are faced with finding workers as well. The H-2B Program which provides workers for the Carni- vals and the Concessionaires, has proven to be very difficult this year. Petitions were filed as early as November, the Priority fee was paid to expedite the progress only to find that in February 2014 the petitions were still being held, with no rea- son given. The results of that process caused Concessionaires and Carnivals to start the Flor- ida season short staffed. In some cases, it meant giving up loca- tions. Issues like this not only affect
the Concessionaires and Carnival operators, it affects the entire Fair industry. NICA along with several other Carnival owners and Concessionaires have joined OABA in the fight to resolve this issue. Have you ever thought about
how you get paid? Where does your revenue come from and how do you control your ex- penses? This is a topic which ap- plies to both Concessionaires and Fairs. Concessionaires are chal- lenged every day to find new products, maintain good equip- ment and retain their locations. This brings us to another thought.

The NICA Board enjoyed a meeting with some of the Clay County Fair board members prior to visiting the fair. Pete Sutton said “We were honored by their visit.”
How to make Concessionaires great at your Fair. You may say, that’s the Concessionaires responsibility, not the Fairs. True, to a point. But are you using the Concessionaires as a part of your marketing program? Are you sharing your expectations for the Fair with the Concessionaires? NICA’s primary goal has always
been to create an open and effective line of communication between Fair staff and the Concessionaires. Com- munication Committees allow the concessionaires to discuss proposed changes and offer suggestions. They are beneficial to the Fair when Con- cessionaires can keep the Fair abreast of changes and trends they see throughout the year. If you do not have a Communication Commit- tee at your Fair, please call the NICA office for assistance in creating one.
