That's what I love about pop music. It can be very bold and uncompromising.

much. We like more of the mellow, hole-in-the-wall places or a good dinner / drinks spot, or a friend's house.

Teresa, what pushes you and Emily to break the mould and leave Oregon for New York? Is it the same kind of motivation that pushes you towards the uncertain arena of music? I always wanted to travel and experience the world and I suppose I was never afraid that I couldn't handle it. I remember the first time I went to New York I had never been to a place like that and I found it so exciting. I just embraced the attitude that you must have in order to survive there and I feel like I became city girl right away. Deciding to be an artist is always a gamble but you just have to embrace that too and dive in. Work hard and pour yourself into the music!

How essential is it to see you guys live, to get the real Warpaint experience? I think playing live is where we really shine. Te real power behind our songs comes to life and I think they make a lot more sense.

I read a quote where you said that playing music is about “creating a communion”; how much is the listener a factor when you’re creating music? During the writing and recording process I actually thought a lot about the years of touring we did and remembering things that audiences seemed to really like and not like. And that played a part in decisions I would make within the songs. I think the listener is really important. Tat being said, making music / art is about taking something from inside and putting it into form without much thought about pleasing anyone else. And then somehow out of that there is a connection made to other people who will undoubtedly relate because we're all human and we experience so

many of the same things. So ultimately it's about communion, but that shouldn't weigh in on the process too much otherwise the sincerity is lost.

I love the double video feature for Disco//very – it’s confident and carefree. Did you get straight into that vibe when the cameras started rolling, or did it come out of some time experimenting / warming up? We just went straight into it. Didn't really think about it much. We also didn't really have much time to get the shots, so we just had to knock it out. If we had had more time to think about it, I think it would have ruined it. It would have been too choreographed and not as wild.

I think I like the video the most because your personalities really come across. Do you four go out together? Do you always own the floor? Haha, yeah, we go out together. We're always together! And we should go out dancing more… that doesn't happen

Finally, I read that you’re on an album of Duran Duran covers! When you get opportunities like that, do you enjoy moments like that, when you can play outside of your own band demands? Yes, it’s so fun! To put a new spin on a song and see if there's anything to be added to something already so good - it's a challenge. It feels so good to play and sing some genius song that someone else has written. You should try it some time!
