On The Cover: A Sonoma County Village Saved!
Sonoma County CA. ~ So- noma County CA. ~ As all long time residents of Sonoma County know, we’ve had years of drought and years of big floods. They come and they go. But when large amounts of rain arrive in short periods of time, our river floods. This large vol- ume of rushing water does what it wants to. The Russian River calmly meanders amongst beau- tiful grape vineyards, landscapes and private property throughout the year, but it can dramatically erode our river banks at flood levels…changing natural fish & wildlife habitat forever.
This is where BioEngineer-
ing Associates Inc. (owned and created by Northern California’s Evan Engber) and Parry Associ- ates (owned by former Sonoma County resident Cam Parry) came into play (some of you may know them
personally). Bio-
Engineering Associates, Inc. is an award-winning, Small Business Enterprise, Engineering Contracting firm, licensed and bonded in California and Oregon. They specialize in water- shed restoration. Cam says he’s just a “fish guy,” but he’s also a NOAA Envi- ronmental Hero Award winner for his work sav- ing native Coho salmon in Green Valley Creek in Forestville, and he chairs the Oregon Hatchery Research Board. During heavy rains in 2008, the Odd Fellows Recreation Club founded in 1928, was in great
danger from closing because of sudden, massive erosion on the Russian River adjacent to the
many residents and owners. For those of you who are not fa- miliar with the word ‘riparian: A riparian zone or riparian area is the interface be- tween land and a river or stream. Riparian is also the proper nomenclature for one of the fifteen ter- restrial biomes of the earth. Plant habitats and communities along the river margins and banks are called riparian veg- etation, characterized by hydrophilic
plants. Ri-

It wasn’t going to be a quick fix and it was going to be a costly restoration because of the large amount of bank to be restored. Odd Fellows resi- dents truly love their river though, and they wanted to do this right. So under the direc- tion of Executive Director Jack Davies and his dedicated board, the community hired Cam as their project manager and Chief Bioengineer Evan Engber and his talented team that includes Kathleen Martin, John Gardner and Kelly Harris (Evan is seen in photo to left with wife Irene). They assisted in obtaining over 1 million dollars in grants from NRCS and California’s Urban Streams Program and designed a habitat-based
solution, recon-
structing historic riparian and fish- eries habitat along the riverbank at the club on the Lower Russian River in Guerneville, California. Working with NOAA, CDFW, ACOE, the Sonoma County Water Agency,

According to some, the first bagel rolled into the world in 1683 when a baker from Vienna Austria was thankful to the King of Poland for saving Austria from Turkish invaders. The baker reshaped the local bread so that it resembled the King’s stirrup. The new bread was called “beugel,” derived from the German word stirrup, “bugel.”
Prepackaged bagels first became available in grocery stores in the 1950’s. Frozen bagels were introduced in 1960.
