SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ Typically I try to avoid writing reviews. I’ll often reference
different
films for noteworthy things done wrong or right but I usually try to stick to my point and not lean too hard on the film itself. This is one of those situations where I saw a movie and a flood of emotions came spewing out the like some- one had just broken the dam with reckless abandon. Now, when I say “emotions” I’m not talking about the ridiculous, “over the top” feel- ings of emotion; it was more, warm reminders. The kind of reminders that turn into a form nostalgia that are usually provoked by a smell, an old song, or even hearing a laugh that’s so distinct its locked itself in your head like a bookmark. Good film makers have always been able to do this, Cameron Crowe and Woody Allen, to name a few. Also the setting is key, and in cases like
these what more memorable setting could one hope for than New York? This leads me to my point. Just recently I saw the charming, in- die, romance “Fading Gigolo” and I couldn’t help but feel it did so many things to make an audience remember the ever present charm of the independent romantic com- edy. Not only that but it also made great efforts to bring the landscape to life, often a trait of the smaller budget films, to maximize scope because who knows if (and when) they’d get the next chance?
