A Sonoma County Village Saved! ... continued from page 2
Riverkeeper, Sotoyome Resource Conservation District, Supervi- sors Mike Reilly and Efren Car- rillo, Chief Administration Officer of the California Assembly John Waldie, the late Senator Pat Wig- gins, and Governor Jerry Brown (and too many friends, volunteers and wonderful people to mention); they stabilized and re-vegetated extensive erosion sites along 2,115 feet of bank and literally saved this village! Nine different bioengineering were
techniques used, includ-
ing 1) Live Willow Brush Mat- tresses; 2) Live Woven Willow Walls; 3) Rock and Live Willow Brush Layers (Branch Packing); 4) Coir Wrapped Soil with Live Willow Brush Layers; 5) Deep Cluster Plantings; 6) Roughened Channels to replace erosion caus- ing culverts; 7) multiple Log and Boulder Fish Habitat Structures; 8) Vegetated Boulder Wing De- flectors; and, 9) storm water pollu- tion prevention techniques. Fast forward to 2014. The proj-
ect was so well done that Cam, Evan, BioEngineering Associates Inc. and the Odd Fellows Com- munity were selected as winners of the 2014 Riparian Challenge
Summer Guide Upbeat in HaLong Bay, Vietnam!
Award for Excellence in Riparian Management granted by the West- ern Division of the American Fish- eries Society.
This is one of the most presti-
gious fisheries awards in the West- ern Hemisphere and is presented annually to the top riparian proj- ect in all of the western portion of North America. It is believed this is the first time such an inter- national riparian honor has been bestowed upon a Sonoma County agency or community. I was invited to the award recep-
tion where I met the tremendous Odd Fellows residents, engineer- ing team, NOAA’s Pat Rutten, and many agency and legislative rep- resentatives (all while enjoying a fine meal cooked by the residents themselves and champagne donat- ed by Korbel). Cam Parry, Evan Engber and his team (and their many amaz- ing friends) changed the lives of a local community by preventing a possible catastrophe. The Upbeat Times honors this team and the Odd Fellows Community. Thank you for doing the right thing for our beautiful river and the people of Sonoma County!

JOKES & Humor # 5
A customer sent an order to a distributor for a large amount of goods totaling a great deal of money.
This was taken in HaLong Bay, a Unesco World Heritage site in Vietnam. We took an 8 cabin junk into the bay for several
days. There are 1600 islands that break the waves from the sea, so the water was like glass. It was a great few days and we were able to kayak to and from floating fishing villages, to deserted islands with caves that we explored, and to floating fish corrals. ~ Howard Greenfield & Denise Lyon

The distributor noticed that the previous bill hadn’t been paid. The collections manager left a voice-mail for them saying, “We can’t ship your new order until you pay for the last one.”
The next day the collections manager received a collect phone call, “Please cancel the order. We can’t wait that long.”
Did you ever notice the people who complain the most about not having enough time to do all their work are the same ones who always stop & tell everyone that they don’t have enough time to do all their work.
