Daniel Smith was the subject of the article “50 Years After March, Views of Fitful Progress,” that appeared in the Aug. 24, 2013, edition of The New York Times. The piece discussed Smith’s attendance at the March of Washington in 1963. During that time, Smith worked as a social worker at the Norwich State Hospital in Connecticut. He hesi- tantly headed down to the March, not knowing if it would evolve into a violent event, after he was persuaded to attend by a colleague. He was surprised by the peaceful and “festive” atmos- phere that surrounded the March.

In the article, he notes that much progress has been made in race relations and creating a nonracial society since 1963, but he does feel that America has hit a wall moving forward, and that Americans need to work to push back.
