Feeding ban aer death of donkey

Continued from page one

Shetland ponies. “People have the best of intentions, but they don’t realise they are giving them harmful food,” he said. Someone had been regularly dumping two large loaves of bread near the donkeys, which could kill them. It was feared that this was also attracting rats, which could pose a danger to the animals as well as the chil- dren who visit the area. Leybourne parish clerk Laraine Barrie said a number of residents had contacted the council to express concern and offer help to Mr Betts. The parish council has now given him £250 towards the costs in- volved in the loss of the don- key. She said: “Mr Betts has had the field for 37 years and is de- voted to the donkeys. He spends many hours looking after them and they are ab- solutely immaculate. “He didn’t ask the council for financial help, but a lot of resi- dents asked if anything could be done to help him.”

downsmail.co.uk Flood fears for homes

AYLESFORD Parish Council has raised concerns about a plan for nearly 100 new homes on a flood- plain.

Landowner Challenger Text Ltd

was granted permission in 2005 for the scheme at the former Somer- field Distribution Centre in Station Road, next to the River Medway. The firm is currently seeking re- vised building conditions approval

from Tonbridge and Malling Coun- cil before starting work. The parish did not object to the details of the proposal for 95 houses and flats, but, after the win- ter storms, has requested a further report from the Environment Agency on the flood risk. Tonbridge and Malling Council’s

latest flood risk assessment antici- pated that nearly all homes built in

the borough until 2021 would be outside a flood plain. The regeneration of Tonbridge

town centre and Aylesford river- side would involve building in high-risk areas, but developments could take place if defenceswere in place. The report said that to meet de-

velopment targets there were no reasonable options in certain areas.

Town spearheads dementia scheme

A PIONEERING scheme is under way inWest Malling to set up a de- mentia-friendly community to im- prove life for people with the condition and their carers. According to an Alzheimer’s So-

ciety survey, a third of people with dementia rarely leave their homes and nearly half felt they were a “burden on society”. West Malling is among the first

six areas in Kent chosen to spear- head the project, which aims to in- volve

shops, businesses,

individuals, schools and groups to help people get out and about. Penny Nicholls recently became

chief executive of Age Concern Malling, which provides a range of

People need a better un- derstanding of those with the con- dition – how to talk to them and respond to them so they feel more confident.” The initial stages of the scheme include setting up a working group, developing training pro-
