Oldest lady Editha dies


THE oldest lady in Snodland has died, six months after celebrat- ing her 100th birthday. Editha Piper, of Malling Road, whose birthday was reported in the August issue of Town Talk, is pic- tured. Shewas un- married and lived in the house she had shared with her par- ents. She car- ried out clerical work and was a dinner lady at the old Brook Street Primary School – now the Church of England Primary School in Roberts Road. She was a member of the


WRVS and gave piano lessons. When she retired at 80, she was working as a shop assistant in Snodland Newsagency. Editha witnessed the doodle-


bug in Malling Road on August 5, 1944, in what was the worst war disaster in Snodland.


Chess club offer SNODLAND Chess Club is offer- ing a six-week free membership trial period to encourage people to return to the game. Secretary Neil Miners said:


“This is the chance to see if join- ing a chess club is the right move for you. There are members at our club of all ages and abilities.” The club has entered three Kent County Chess Association com- petitions – the Intro Cup, Tom Fuller Cup and the Harvey Cup. Meetings are from 7.30pm on Thursdays in the pavilion at the Cricket Meadow, off Rocfort Road. ABBY Chapman celebrated her 11th birthday by leading out Maidstone United with skipper Steve Watt in the Ryman League Premier Divi- sion match against Bury Town. The St Katherine’s Primary School pupil started following Maidstone two years ago with her dad Keith and grandpar- ents, Keith and Pat Chapman, of Queens Avenue, Snodland. “I really enjoy it,” she said.

new school KENT County Council has an- nounced that Valley Invicta Acad- emies Trust will sponsor the new primary school at Holborough Lakes, Snodland. We reported in the last Town Talk


that the school is due to open in September 2015. The trust is also sponsoring new schools at Leybourne Chase and Kings Hill. TheDepartment for Ed- ucation is giving £31m for new schools and extra classrooms for existing schools in the county. Roger Gough, cabinet member


for education and health reform at KCC, said: “These schools are a vital part of making sure we have enough places from September 2015, and it is good news that we are clear about who will be running these schools. I look forward to seeing these schools thrive.” The two primary schools in Snodland, The Church of England and St Katherine’s, will have insuf- ficient places in September 2015. Currently there are 860 children at- tending, with a total of 981 places available. Forecasts indicate de- mand for places will increase to 1,116.
