Drivers facing parking hike

MOTORISTS in Tonbridge and Malling face steeper parking charges, although some car parks, including Snodland and Ayles- ford will remain free. Councillors agreed the rates after hearing from Steve Humphrey, di- rector of planning, that it was time for a modest increase. He said there had been no rise in charges anywhere in the borough since the last review in 2011. Around £21,000 had been in-

vested in on-street parking since then and there was a staff cost of £30,000 a year involved in imple- menting local parking plans. Busi- ness rates, which the council had to pay on its car parks, had also risen by 17% since the last review. “Fees and charges must be care-

fully balanced by consideration of the potential impacts of new or in- creased charges on a local economy

that is currently in a delicate state,” he said. Daily charges at the 220-space car

park at Blue Bell Hill, which has be- come popular with commuters, will rise by a third from £1.50 to £2. A range of increases was agreed

for Tonbridge but Snodland,Ayles- ford and Martin Square at Lark- field, would remain free to support local economic vitality. Mr Humphrey saidWest Malling

was subject to a separate review. No charges were currently pro- posed for the High Street car park, although this would need to be kept under review, and annual business permits at the town’s Ryarsh Lane car park would re- main at £50. The new prices will come into ef-

fect on April 1 and are expected to yield £137,000 a year.

Tough challenge for Ellan

AN Aylesford mum will be making her way to The Lake District for the challenge of a lifetime in the name of charity this May. Ellan Iaquaniello (41) will be

the only runner from Kent and just one of 15 athletes taking part in 10 marathons in 10 days as part of The Brathay 10 in 10. Billed as one of the toughest challenges on two legs, the mother of one said: “I have my sights on the biggest endurance challenge I will ever attempt. I’m very proud to have been selected. “I have raced in 29 marathons

so far and over 50 half-marathons and I regularly compete for Lark- field Athletics Club, but this will be a combination of both physical and mental endurance.” Her first run will be on May 9,

around Lake Windermere. Be- tween them, the running team hope to raise more than £100,000 for the Brathay Trust, which helps vulnerable and abused children. You can sponsor Ellan at www.justgiv- ing.com/ellan10in10

Cash help to boost businesses

DISCUSSIONS are taking place in Snodland over how to spend a grant of about £7,500 from Ton- bridge & Malling Borough Council to help boost trade in the town. The money is part of a £100,000

grant from a Government innova- tion fund. Snodland is one of the villages in the borough to have been offered funding to help pro- mote small businesses, including independent traders in shopping centres.

Snodland Town Council and the chamber of commerce are investi-

gating who owns the land outside the Co-op Food Store by the mosaic in Holborough Road. It is consid- ered a suitable site for a planter to be installed with flowers during the year and a Christmas tree. The chamber of commerce is looking into providing signs on the A228 at each end of the approaches to the town advertising local shops and free parking. Other ideas in- clude free internet wifi in the town and a pedestrian access from the new development at Holborough Lakes to Covey Hall Road.
