Easy Care volunteers at Brooklyn

Easy Care volunteers tame wild gardens

A sausage sizzle, billy tea and a shared birthday cake - the staples of an Easy Care Gardening combined team who gathered to blitz an overgrown garden in the peaceful village of Brooklyn. With 15 energetic volunteers, kindly neighbours bringing cups of coffee and stopping for a chat, the job was soon well underway. Rampant morning glory tendrils covering

the entire front yard were ripped out to reveal a magnolia tree, already in bud beneath the weeds. The garden within was slowly revealed, three stepped beds were mulched to deter weeds and a regular lawn mowing program implemented to keep further weeds at bay. “The most important thing with weed

control is consistent follow up,” explained Easy Care Gardening team leader Caryn Thomson. “The idea is to clear the weeds and

then monitor the garden. Over two growing seasons, with four visits a year, we can control weeds and prevent them taking hold again. Any good weed control program has to be long term,” she said. The main priority of this first garden

visit was to create safe access to the house and clear the pathway around it. 96 Seniors & Care Guide 2014

New Zealand wire bush invading a

neighbouring property was also cut back and the front yard was converted to “easy care” by mulching the garden beds and adding the lawn to a regular mowing schedule. A multitude of garden rubbish bags and weed bundles were soon stacked on the verge, to be collected by the council and recycled as green waste. Three volunteer gardening teams

joined together to tackle this job with great camaraderie in the sunshine. Their combined efforts enabled them to make a huge difference in just one day, leaving a garden that can once again be enjoyed by its owner. Easy Care Gardening Inc is a not- for-

profit organisation. Teams of volunteer gardeners weed, prune and mulch to make safe, tidy and easy care the gardens of frail aged pensioners and people on a disability support pension. This means Easy Care Gardening clients are able to remain living in their own homes for longer. Easy Care Gardening is available in the

Hornsby, Hunters Hill, Ku-ring-gai and Ryde areas. For more information: please call 9983 1644 or visit: www.easycaregardening.org.au See Easy Care's listing on opposite page.
