Strong results for the third quarter of the year helped the pharmaceutical and healthcare products group Shire to an 11% rise in its share price during October. The group, which has its UK headquarters at Basingstoke, said the figures demonstrated good progress with product sales up 13% and total revenues up 12% to $1.237 million.

Chief executive Flemming Ornskov commented: “We’re demonstrating execution of our strategy, which is putting Shire on a path of sustainable growth. Our focus on commercial excellence is improving product sales and we’re excited about the opportunities in our pipeline.”

XP Power, the Pangbourne- based company that designs and manufactures power controllers, was among the fastest share price

risers among medium-sized quoted companies.

In its interim management statement for the quarter to September it said its trading environment had been positive, with revenues up 11% year on year.

“The business is again displaying forward momentum, with order intake for the third quarter exceeding the third quarter revenue. There are encouraging signs that global demand for the capital equipment manufactured by our customers is growing again.”

If followers of the John Lewis of Hungerford share price thought last month’s report of a 50% rise took it to its peak, they should have kept an open mind. For the stock rose another 58% in October after the company reported sales in the first quarter up 13% to £1.7m.

Skills for Business

Leading manufacturer gives scholarship to Bucks student

Bradley Rolling (centre) with Phil Cummings and Gemma Robinson of Sennheiser UK. Robinson is a BA (Hons) Music Management graduate from Bucks now working as a channel marketing executive with Sennheiser after completing an internship with the company during her studies

A Buckinghamshire New University audio and music production student has been presented with the first annual Scholarship Award from leading audio manufacturer Sennheiser UK.

Bradley Rolling, in his second year at the University in Queen Alexandra Road, High Wycombe, received a cheque for £1,500, along with a Neumann TLM 103 microphone and a pair of 25th anniversary Sennheiser HD25 headphones.

The Scholarship is presented to audio and music production students based on their academic performance in the first year and is part of an education partnership agreement between the University and Sennheiser.

It was presented following interviews between five shortlisted students and Phil Cummings, Sennheiser’s marketing special projects manager.

Rolling said: “The money will be really useful as I have plans to set up my own music production and mixing business and develop a website for it.

“The professional kit from Sennheiser and Neumann will be great for both my degree work and for what I plan to do after I graduate.”

Newman, who also study audio and music production, each received a pair of Sennheiser HD25 headphones.

Phil Cummings said: “All of the candidates interviewed well and demonstrated a real engagement with both their degree course and the ideas they had for future careers in audio and music production.

“Bradley’s professional, confident and driven approach really stood out though, and the ideas he had for setting up his own website to promote his production and mixing skills were really impressive.”

Sennheiser's UK office is located at Globe Park, Marlow, Buckinghamshire. It is an official education partner of Bucks New University, creating industry-linked opportunities for students and focusing their employability.

The partnership provides a range of educational benefits for students, including the Scholarship Award. The University’s main recording studio is called ‘The Sennheiser Sound Lab’, and the company provides equipment for use in the studio, including state-of-the-art digital microphones.
