THE ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND Winner: Pulsant

“They are a dynamic group of individuals who have a clear passion for the business and this comes through in abundance when engaging with the team. A truly deserving winner of the Management Team of the Year award.”

True praise indeed from the judges of this category, sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland, which looks to identify a management team which has not only driven its business forward using knowledge and creative ideas, but also has strong leadership and teambuilding skills.

The company at the heart of their plaudits and taking the sought-after title was Reading-based technology company Pulsant, and it was Nigel Shaw, chief operating officer, who collected the trophy from John Sergeant and Robin Barnes, RBS regional director, Thames Valley and Solent.

One of the UK’s largest providers of cloud computing, colocation, managed hosting and managed networks, Pulsant has 174 staff and operates predominantly in the technology, public and finance sectors.

It owns and operates 10 data centres across the UK and provides services across the globe from data centres in New York, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.

It employs

an expert team that creates advanced and innovative solutions to help clients optimise performance and cost-effectively manage, store and safeguard data.

THE BUSINESS MAGAZINE – THAMES VALLEY – DECEMBER 13/JANUARY 14

In 2013 Pulsant was awarded the Royal Warrant as a provider of hosted IT and data centres services to the Royal Household.

In its entry, the Pulsant team said: “We try to set a clear direction for the business: being clear on what we do, what we don’t do and the markets we are addressing. We review and develop the strategy every year and include a number of employees in this process. We then communicate the strategy regularly to employees and give updates on progress throughout the year.”

Team briefings, an internal newsletter, employee surveys and social events help ensure employees are kept up-to-date and involved in company plans.

Describing itself as “highly ambitious”, the company aims to be a top three European data centre provider in a very competitive market.

The judges added: “Pulsant has successfully managed the rapid rise of the business with revenues enjoying double-digit growth per annum within the past three years, via both organic growth and through the careful identification and implementation of key acquisition targets.”

Mark Howling, CEO, Pulsant, said: “It goes without saying that we are incredibly pleased with winning the Business Management Team of the Year Award.

“The team is comprised of a dynamic mix www.businessmag.co.uk

of individuals with different expertise and experience, but we all have the same passion for the technology, for the company and for what we do.

“I believe that it is this passion that is our differentiator and each of us carries it through to the people we work with and the projects we work on. This recognition of our dedication and passion from such a prestigious source is a real honour.”

Taking second place was GRITIT, headquartered at Uxbridge, the UK’s leading provider of winter gritting and maintenance services, and last year’s winner of SME of the Year.

Sharing joint third place were Finchampstead company InstaGroup, a manufacturer and installer of installation products and energy-efficient solutions throughout the UK; and Xtrac, already a big winner on the night.

Receiving Highly Commended certificates were Corporate Health and ByBox.
