GRUNDON Winner: GE Healthcare


GE Healthcare achieved a clean sweep when it was awarded the Green Progress Award for the second time in a row.


Sponsored by Grundon Waste Management, a leading supplier of integrated waste management solutions, the judges were looking for the organisation which had made the most progress over the past 12 months in 'green' practices.


They wanted to find evidence of employee involvement and a commitment to the waste hierarchy of reduce, re-use, recycle and recover.


Shortlisted alongside GE Healthcare were the UK Atomic Energy Authority and Polythene UK and the judges admitted that they had found it “incredibly difficult” to choose between the three “very worthy” finalists.


They said: “Each organisation took a slightly different approach and achieved major improvements in their green credentials, but what swung it for us was the internal working group at the winning company, comprised entirely of highly enthusiastic volunteers. This gets right to the heart of employee buyin which we believe will be absolutely essential for any organisation seeking to secure long- term environmental gains.”


When GE Healthcare’s name was read out there were loud cheers and everyone on the table went to the stage to collect the trophy from Andrew Malone, operations director at Grundon Waste Management.

A thrilled Denise Doyle, who leads the volunteer team and was among those who received the award, said: “Having won the inaugural Green Progress Award in 2012, we were even more delighted to win for a second time in 2013. For the Grove Energy & Waste Action Team (GEWAT) of Life Sciences, GE Healthcare, this award recognises sustainability and continued momentum by a team of 17 volunteers based at The Grove Centre, Amersham, who are passionate about the environment.


“Engagement both at work and at home has been at the centre of activities this year, running competitions and devising puzzles for members of staff families to engage future generations. In addition, ‘myth busting’, fact based information and practical demonstrations about resource conservation have been at the heart of all communications.


“The GEWAT mantra is ‘Save Energy, reduce waste – Energy for Life’ which reflects the broad-based approach and dedication of the team, GE Healthcare and world focus on environmental issues.


“Winning the Green Progress Award for a second time acknowledges the team’s volunteering efforts and the continuing move forward with true passion for all things green in the challenging business environment of today.”

GE Healthcare’s Medical Diagnostics division, a $2 billion global leader in pharmaceutical and molecular diagnostics which are used for the early detection, diagnosis and management of diseases including cancer and Alzheimer’s.


Over the past 12 months, energy related initiatives have included a three-day Energy Treasure Hunt with the aim of finding simple solutions to save energy; external lights being replaced with more energy efficient LED fittings; wording has been improved on recycling bins to simplify the segregation process; and a bicycle hire scheme encourages people to cycle at lunchtimes or to and from work.


At the same time, The Grove Centre has reduced the amount of waste it sends to landfill from 30.4 tonnes in 2011 to just 6.4 tonnes in 2012, a reduction of some 79%.


Joint second place was awarded to Witney- based Polythene UK, which supplies some of the largest blue-chip companies with polythene bags, pallet covers and shrink wrap; and UK Atomic Energy Authority, which carries out fusion research on behalf of the Government and manages the JET project at Culham.
