Where I live...

West Malling Parish Council We report here on just a few of the many items discussed at the September and October meetings.

Ryarsh Lane allotments have proved very successful with all the plots being regularly worked. However, their popularity means that there is inevitably a waiting list and more requests for changes and improvements. Parish councillors, in consultation with the tenants and the Ryarsh Lane Allotment Society, has spent some time in putting together a management plan and supporting allotment policy guidance document which will be brought into action as soon as possible. Please note that both documents are for guidance as any obligatory amendments to tenancy agreements have to be notified a full year ahead of implementation. However, they will be used to work towards best practice and will be reviewed on a regular basis.

Kent Orchards for Everyone scheme The bid to this scheme has been successful and funding will be available over the next four years to support the sterling work that continues in Macey’s Meadow, a prime example of a thriving community orchard. It showcases the older varieties of fruit and nut trees in a classic Kentish landscape setting. These trees reward the loving care and attention they are given by fruiting heavily in the autumn. Please feel free to taste the fruit but remember that the fruit is grown so that as many people as possible in the community can sample it (as well leaving some for the wildlife!).

Complaints have been received about the growth of the hedge that forms the boundary between Norman Road and the orchard. Due to the changeable weather in 2013, the hedge has needed more trims than allowed for in the existing contract.

The Meadow Volunteers have agreed to include managing the hedge in their work schedule and will trim it on an as-and-when basis to prevent it encroaching onto the Norman Road pavement.

Kent Highways Seminar was attended by two parish councillors at the beginning of October. KHS recognises that while its workload has statutory obligations, there is scope for partnership working with parishes. Parish councils can provide practical knowledge, eg. land and property ownership where overhanging trees and bushes are obstructing pavements as well as practical action, eg maintain flower beds or cutting grassed areas. On a seasonal note, KHS is improving its winter service by using data and experience gained over the last four winters. On offer is a ‘find your nearest salt bin’ web page and news that farmers who are contracted to snow plough local roads will be offered the opportunity to carry out gritting as well.

West Malling Christmas lights: the big switch-on will be on November 17, 2013.

Check out the Malling Society’s website for an update on the Malling Abbey Cascade.

West Malling Village Hall is applying to gain the Hallmark seal of approval.
