Awards scheme’s search for star volunteer Place your vote
CELEBRATE Maidstone – the town’s search for a star competition – will be looking to honour the area’s unsung heroes from the Voluntary Sector this year. The awards – now in their third year – include
two new categories, honouring the next genera- tion of good Samaritans (young volunteers under 16) and those keeping Maidstone’s countryside and wildlife safe. Neil Pattison (left), chair of Cele-
brate Maidstone 2014, said: “It is not possible to place a monetary value on the amount of work vol- untary organisations and individ- ual volunteers carry out for the Maidstone community, but we are confident that this year’s focus on
the voluntary sector will uncover hundreds of stories of good deeds.” The winner of the Celebrate Maidstone Life-
time Achievement award will be announced in December, but the public are invited to vote for the stars of the other categories, which include:
Abuse charge A MAN who was abusive to a woman in Snodland risks going to prison if he re-offends. Reece Day (34), of no fixed address, admitted using threat- ening behaviour in Amiss Drive. He failed to surrender to custody at Tonbridge police sta- tion. He was sentenced at West Kent Magistrates’ Court to 60 days in prison, suspended for 12 months, with £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.

Robbery suspect appears in court
A 50-YEAR-old Maidstone man has appeared in court in con- nection with a knifepoint raid at a jewellery shop.
Peter Sanderson, of Fairmeadow, was charged with robbery and possessing an of- fensive weapon. He was re- manded in custody to appear before Maidstone Crown Court for a preliminary hearing. Police were called to John An- gell jewellers in Tonbridge High
Street at 9:30am one morning following a report of a robbery. A man had allegedly entered the store carrying a knife and asked to look at a selection of rings, believed to be worth about £3,000, which he then made off with.
No-one was harmed during the incident.
A man was arrested after being stopped on the A20 at Ditton at 1.55pm the same day.

Hospices shop TWO Kent hospices have joined forces to open a shop. Wisdom & Heart, a new part- nership between Aylesford- based Heart of Kent Hospice and The Friends of the Wisdom Hospice, opened its first outlet in Sittingbourne.
Donations of clothing, books, CDs, DVDs, electrical goods and household items are wel- come at the shop during open- ing hours.
