Mussel bar is a family affair
WITH many of its residents attracted to West Malling by its reputation as a great place to raise children, it is fitting that one of the town’s largest restaurants is rooted in family.
In 1965 Frank Pakay who flew in the Lancaster Bombers during World War II, opened The Bakery restaurant in a picturesque 14th century hall house along the High Street and, aside from a six-year spell from 2004 when it was leased out, the restaurant has been run by the family ever since – and always by a Frank.
When the third generation of Frank SURNAME’S reopened it in September 2010, there was only one name for it. “I decided to call it Frank's Restaurant,” said the current owner. “My grandfather was named Frank and was a bit of a character about town; my father is named Frank and I am Frank the third.”
Exposed beamed ceilings and a large open fireplace accentuate
the restaurant’s cosy feel. The wall has photographs of West Malling through the ages.
A willing band of friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff members are on hand to explain Frank’s undoubted specialism: mussels, with 25 different recipes covering everything from Thai through to Italian, Indian and European. Whether you want your mussles marinated in something mild or with a kick – Belgium Congo comes with plenty of chilli – all tastes are catered for.
There is much more to Frank’s than just mussels. A comprehensive menu contains an array of other dishes, including succulent steaks of all persuasion, plenty of vegetarian options and a wide range of fish dishes.
For special occasions look no further than lobster, which has a tenderness that demands your attention. Like Frank’s, it is truly something to behold.
