Charity boost STAFF at the Kings Hill branch of Kimberly-Clark have some- thing to celebrate in 2013. After 13 years of fundraising,

the team has raised £36,365 for Macmillan Cancer Support – enough to fund a Macmillan nurse for 1,454 hours, provid- ing vital support for cancer pa- tients, their friends and family. This year, employees have

raised £9,608, with more to come in by the end of the year. They took part in theWorld’s Biggest Coffee Morning, with a bake-off by 12 competitors rais- ing £238.17. Dave Charlton, leader of the

firm’s charity and social team, said: “The staff were extremely generous and I hope that next year’s eventwill be better still.”

Heritage plaques BLUE plaques will highlight the sites in Tonbridge and Malling where important peo- ple from history lived and worked. The scheme has been intro- duced by the borough council to celebrate the area’s heritage. The first plaque was erected

at the Tonbridge home of nov- elist E M Forster and will be followed by four others hon- ouring the links of notable peo- ple with the town. It is hoped to roll out the scheme to other parts of the borough in the near future.

Train links ‘running by 2018’

COMMUTERSin Maidstone and West Malling can look forward to a direct rail link to the City – but not for at least four years. The Department for Transport

has announced the new Thames- link franchise will include an extended peak period service from Maidstone East to several stations serving the City of Lon- don.

The new service will provide

a much-needed City service for commuters from the Maidstone East line, who lost their Cannon Street service in December 2009. It will also offer a useful link

to St Pancras, providing connec- tions to a wide range of domestic and international services for passengers travelling from sta-

tions on the mid-Kent route. The service will operate from Maidstone East viaWest Malling (for Kings Hill), Borough Green and Wrotham, Otford, Swanley, St Mary Cray, Bickley, Bromley South, Elephant & Castle, Black- friars, City Thameslink and Far- ringdon to St Pancras. The DfT has promised at least

two trains an hour during the three-hour morning peak period to London, with the same level of service during the three-hour evening peak period from Lon- don. A reduced service will op- erate during off peak periods. KCC has welcomed the an- nouncement and David Brazier, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “This is

good news for commuters using stations on the Maidstone East line who need to get to work in various City locations. This an- nouncement demonstrates that our council's rail action plan for Kent is standing up for Kent res- idents and commuters. “KCC is very grateful to all

those who have contributed to this outcome, through our an- nual rail summits and through the rail action plan's consulta- tion process." The new rail service, which

will be operatedwith brand new Siemens Thameslink trains, is planned to start in 2018, al- though the operator of the new franchise will not be known until May next year.
