MACEY’S IS PICK OF THE CROP

MACEY’s Meadow at West Malling is one of 15 traditional community orchards which will benefit from recent funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund through the Kent Orchards for Everyone project.

The meadow has been restored and maintained by a superb band of hardworking volunteers. Now the project will have the extra benefits of orchard skills training, tools, celebration events, new signs, seating and the support of a dedicated orchards officer over the coming four years.

This exciting scheme, led by the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership and the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, will support and inspire people to explore, enjoy and get involved in their traditional community orchards.

It aims to revive the quintessential Garden of England image of Kent with its patchwork of orchards which have suffered a significant decline in the past 50 years.

Local county Cllr Trudy Dean said: “It’s a tremendous pat on the back for the volunteers who have brought this orchard back to life over the last 10 years, and worked for over two years for this grant. We look forward to welcoming even more visitors to the site in Norman Road. It’s tucked away behind the hedge, but once you get through the gates, it’s a lovely picture of Kent as it used to look. Come and enjoy it.”

Christmas window award

WEST Malling Parish Council has used prize money awarded to the town as winner of the Kent Rural Community of the Year 2013 to buy this splendid shield.

It will be awarded to the best Christmas shop window in the town so this year’s displays are expected to be even better than last year’s fabulous windows.

Dragon's Den funds fences, tents, microphones, blinds, and a horse!

MORE than 100 people turned out to vote money for their favourite local groups and projects on Saturday, October 19 at The Malling School, East Malling.

Local county Councillor Trudy Dean hands out her annual £10k member’s community grant fund from KCC at this event each year. Residents aged over 12 have an electronic voting pad and clubs and groups who would like to receive up to £2,000 have three minutes to persuade the audience to vote for them.

This year Leybourne Riding School came top of the popular vote when organisers put in a bid to buy a new horse.

At the end, Cllr Dean said: “Once more we had a fantastic attendance. It’s great to be able to thank and help all the volunteers who provide support and activities which enable so many people to enjoy life more. We will keep on trying to find funds for those who weren't successful today".
