Community Notices New seats in Dunblane...
It was reported to the Civic Society in November 2011 that in Ochlochy Park there was a seat in need of replacement or repair. A plaque on the seat stated it was originally provided by
The Dunblane Society, the
predecessor of the Civic Society, “in loving memory of GBE” who we understand was a founder member. The dedication on the seat is to Gordon Esselmont. The seat in Ochlochy Park was in need of repair and this has been done by members of the midweek group, and should last a few years. The committee of the Civic Society agreed that rather than replacing the seat, it would be better in the fi rst instance to put a new one in a position where it would be well used. As a result a new seat has been installed in the Community Garden along with one donated by the Burns Club.
The Dunblane Burns Club (n. 503) formed in 1923, held its fi rst Burns Supper in the Victoria Hall on the 25th January 1924. From then on, with the exception of the the war years, a Burns supper was held annually in various local venues, until 2009. Unfortunately it became increasingly diffi cult to form a committee to run the Club and it was decided, with regret, to disband the Burns Club.
A group of Trustees was elected to deal with the fi nal closure and disbursement of all monies being held by the Club. As part of this, the Trustees agreed to contact ‘Dunblane in Bloom’ with a view to providing a commemorative bench for the residents and visitors to Dunblane.
The bench is now in place within the Community Gardens beside the Allanwater, about which Burns wrote:
By Allan-side I chanced to rove, Whilst Phebus sank beyond Benledi;
The winds were whispering thro’ the grove, The yellow corn was waving ready
