Christmas is coming and so are the Guests?! Home Styling Advice brought to you monthly by MHOR design

When you are thinking of decorating a room, how do you plan it? Designers and stylists use mood or concept boards to convey the overall

feel of a project, putting together

images and objects to inspire. It is particularly useful at the early stages of a project as a guide tool to show clients ideas for approval before proceeding further. You can use a Concept Board to plan your design it keeps you focused and prevents overspend.

With the festive season creeping up many of us will be looking to accommodate guests and so we are showing you how to put together a concept board for a guest room.

Firstly, decide your format. Digital or Hard Copy. We have done it digitally above (Evernote) but if using card we use poster board usually 35x55cms. This gives you the area required to add tester colours, sample of wallpaper and images of items you want to place in your room.

Secondly, browse the web, magazines, catalogues and interior books for inspiration. There are several ways to kick start your design. You may have a favourite item you want to incorporate. In our example the client

wanted to stick to a couple of suppliers and as they already had the bed (John Lewis) we started there. However, if you are starting from scratch our advice is start with a colour scheme and you if you want wallpaper, start there.

Using our design principles we stick with three main colours. In our board we are using Today’s Interior wallpaper range, Monaco, for a feature wall. The remaining walls we used Farrow and Ball Old White no.4. The fl ooring is a dark hardwood.

Finally, you start to add your layers. In our

bedroom, we add a grey bedspread, white bed linen (which I usually always use), TK Maxx, cushions with pattern to add texture, with accents of a mustard yellow and grey cushion (Dunelm Mill). The chair is the “Jennifer” chair (John Lewis). Lighting is provided by two lamps “coralline” from John Lewis.

You can see that by putting these elements together on a concept board, like we have done, it results in a visual reality of how it works. Your guests may never want to leave!
