Children can make edible “sparklers” for Bonfi re Night with chocolate fi ngers. Fill a saucer with cake sprinkles and simply dip the end of each chocolate fi nger into hot water, then into the sprinkles. Chill to set.

An alternative to toffee apples is chocolate apples. Children can wash and dry eating apples (but may need help to insert a lolly stick through each core) then dip them into melted chocolate. These can be left to set on greaseproof paper or rolled onto something else fi rst, such as cocoa powder or ground nuts. Later faces or patterns can be added with icing pens.

Indoor rockets can be made from the tubes inside kitchen rolls. Give each child a tube to paint, or to decorate by sticking on paper stars. A circle of paper makes a cone to tape on one end of the tube and strips of brightly coloured tissue can be stuck at the other end.
