St. Marys Primary School - Poetry Performances

Anita Govan, Stirling’s poetry Makkar, arrived 5 weeks ago to inform P5/6 that they were doing a poetry slam. No-one knew what a poetry slam was so Anita explained. A poetry slam is a performance performed by poets who have written a poem about a certain subject - our subject was Words in the Woods. Two weeks later Anita came back to help us write our own poem and we did really well and some of us got our poems fi nished in the fi rst week. Because we were doing our poems about the forest we went up to our local forest to build our performance areas on our own or in groups. Our stages were amazingly awesome!

The day came for the poetry slam – National Poetry Day. Everyone was ready, the stages were in place and all the poets were ready. But before we could start Orla (P6) welcomed and thanked parents and community members for coming to watch our poetry slam. P7 were tour guides and showed everyone around all the seventeen groups as the poets performed their poems. Here are some parent comments “Fantastic! Well done I like your variety and style” “Well done everyone it was enchanting!” “Creative” and some comments from P5/6 from how it went “It was fun and exciting” “It was amazing” “fandabidosie” “I liked the atmosphere”.

All the P5/6 and St Mary’s communities enjoyed it thoroughly. After all that P5/6 were told they would be coming back up the next day to perform it one last time in front of Anita Govan. Anita Govan also performed a special poem for St. Mary’s because a P7 pupil asked her to write a poem about the red coat she wore when she fi rst visited our school. We have been so lucky to have these amazing experiences and P5/6 have defi nitely improved their poetry skills.

European Languages Day!

It’s just a normal day at St Mary’s...right? Well actually, the 26th of September was an amazing day when we all celebrated European Languages Day. European languages day is all about celebrating diff erent languages and cultures from around Europe. Most of us brought in a lot of stuff to do with countries we have been to, have relatives from or have lived in.

P1/2 had to bring in toys to help them teach a word or phrase in a new language, P3/4 were told to bring either a picture of a piece of traditional clothing or an outfi t from another country to tell the class about and P5-7 had to bring something personal like information about the country they were talking about and to teach the class a few phrases. We were all surprised about how much they knew!

Dugald (P4) said “I loved how so many people were so good at teaching us words and phrases!” Ardan (P5) exclaimed, “Well done to all those people who took time to work hard!”
