UNITED EFFORT BRINGS SUCCESS FOR FRED. OLSEN

UK INDUSTRY FIRST The Forewind project utilised the full ‘turnkey’ capacity within the Fred. olsen group which can draw on the combined expertise of up to seven related companies.

To begin with, the Forewind project was the first commercial assignment for Fred. olsen wIndcarrier’s vessel the Brave Tern. The Brave Tern, along with her sister ship the Bold Tern, are state-of-the-art jack-up installation vessels built to the ng9000 specification. Capable of jacking up in water depths of up to 45m, lifting 800 tonnes and carrying 5,300 tonnes of cargo, the Bold and Brave

BUCKET FOUNDATION

The Bucket Foundation used at Dogger Bank was developed by Fred. olsen related company Universal Foundation, through The Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator programme and features a steel bucket sunk into the seabed by a suction and jetting system. A second meteorological mast will be installed at the Dogger Bank site later this year.

ONLY MONTHS AFTER FRED. OLSEN UNITED MOVED INTO ITS NEW UK OFFICES AT ORBISENERGY, LOWESTOFT, THE COMPANY BEGAN THE INSTALLATION OF THE FIRST METEOROLOGICAL MAST ON THE 9GW DOGGER BANK OFFSHORE WINDFARM UTILISING A GAMUT OF PIONEERING TECHNOLOGIES. AMONG THEM WAS THE INNOVATIVE BUCKET FOUNDATION

Then, a new and safer installation technique was used to lift the met mast tower on to the foundation.

JOINT DEVELOPMENT

Developed jointly between Forewind, Fred. Olsen United and the related companies, the groundbreaking installation process uses strong, lightweight plastic guide cones that are strapped to the tower flanges that greatly reduce the amount of human intervention needed during the operation.

Stuart Thornton, UK Manager for Fred. Olsen United, said: “We’ve demonstrated the combined capabilities of the Fred. Olsen-related companies in a pioneering project as well as taken an important step towards the full commercialisation of the

The Bold Tern was also the first installation vessel to carry and install eight Siemens 3.6MW turbines in a single deployment whilst working on the Riffgat project in the German Bight earlier this year.

Bucket Foundation technology. We’re proud to be leading the way.”

He said that the vast potential from planned windfarms off the UK’s east coast was key to bringing Fred. olsen United to the East of England.

GREAT LOCATION

“Lowestoft is a great location as it’s already a major hub for the windpower industry and OrbisEnergy is operations centre for the Greater Gabbard wind farm.

“We are closest to the massive Round 3 East Anglia Offshore Windfarm Zone and well positioned for Hornsea and Dogger Bank and a range of Round 2 sites.”
