COMMERCIAL DIVING

James Fisher’s in-house diving services have been further enhanced by the addition of these two companies and the James Fisher group is quickly becoming a major UK renewables diving, ROV and subsea services contractor.


EXPERIENCE


The group has over 40 years’ experience providing a wide range of diving and ROV services and equipment to a wide range of industries, as well as inspection, repair, maintenance and salvage teams.


Specific experience in the offshore wind industry includes: J/I tube modification, cable installation, scour protection, cable protection, mattress installation, corrosion prevention and subsea inspections.


NEW CHALLENGES


James Fisher regularly meets new challenges, developing new equipment and devising new techniques and procedures to meet the evolving needs of the renewable diving and ROV industry.


CARBON TRUST FUNDING A launch and recovery system (LARS) designed by Divex to solve the problem of transferring engineers and equipment safely on to offshore wind turbines, was one of the six innovative concepts that received further funding from the Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) Programme.


Divex designed a LARS that uses a semi- submersible cradle that can be lowered from the stern of the mother ship to launch and retrieve daughter craft by synchronising with the wave motion. The system is effective as far as 300km offshore in wave heights up to around three metres, even in challenging weather conditions and rough seas.


Derek Clarke, Joint Managing Director of Divex, said: “In designing our innovative Boat LARS we have used our years of experience in deploying diving bells into the harsh North Sea so we certainly understand the environment and the hazards involved. This further funding enables us to advance the engineering and undertake model testing at Strathclyde University as proof of concept.”


CASE STUDY – THANET OFFSHORE WINDFARM (TOW)


Osiris was contracted to work on the cable installation programme for TOW. At the peak of their operations they had over 60 divers and 30 riggers. In addition, 10 shoreside management and engineering support staff were required to assist with the 24 hour operation.


Whilst working at TOW Osiris designed and used a range of unique tools and methods that were tailor-made specifically for the project. An example of this was the use of a bend restrictor shoe to allow cable pulls into the I-tubes without compromising the cable’s safe bend radius. The design for the bend restrictor shoe was trialled and modified in order to produce a bespoke design that was easily installed by the diver.
