Faye Tozer is coming to town...

How excited are you about bringing Singin’ in the Rain to Cardiff and why? I am so excited to be bringing Singin’ in the Rain to Cardiff. I have played the New Theatre, the arena and the stadium, but this will be my first time at the Millennium Centre – such a beautiful tailor-made venue. I have a group of wonderful friends in Cardiff and my whole family will be joining me for Christmas. It will be a truly magical time.

What is it like playing a part like Lina Lamont? Lina Lamont is a totally new type of character for me to play. It’s been so much fun to learn. It’s my first musical that I’m not dancing or singing in so for me it’s almost a play and I’m having to perfect my comic timing and embrace her vulnerability that leads to the tragic end of her career. She has fabulous costumes and steals the show at times with her entrances and exits. Fabulous fun!

What other musicals have you appeared in and which was your favourite? Singin’ in the Rain will be my tenth musical to date. Tell Me On A Sunday was my first in 2004. I played Sally in Me And My Girl but I also loved playing Eva Cassidy in Over The Rainbow.

You rose to stardom as a member of ‘Steps’ – what was that like? When I was younger I never dreamt I’d become a pop star. In my heart I was heading for theatre but I was auditioning for anything and everything. It was a whirlwind to be in. A lot of energy and travelling, elation and heartache but I wouldn’t swap it for the world and I am the luckiest person in the world to have been a part of it. You cannot compare a

Steps tour to a musical theatre tour. In some ways the huge venues become quite isolating

as a performer. In theatre you have a story to tell – you make your audience laugh and cry and with Singin’ in the Rain it’s a visual spectacular with beautiful choreography and unforgettable songs. This production is a lavish no expense spared ‘must see’.

Favourite ‘Steps’ song? It has always been It’s The Way You Make Me Feel. I loved making the video at Brocket Hall. We recorded the track in Sweden and it always goes down well wherever we perform it.

What other things have you been up to in recent years? Aside from musicals, plays and a few independent films I have become a patron for the Little Theatre I grew up in and also a patron for Josie’s Dragonfly Trust which is a charity for children with terminal illness. I am now a mother to my beautiful four-year-old boy Benjamin and my husband Michael and I make as much quality time for him as possible with our crazy schedules. After the ‘Steps’ reunion last year I decided to take the summer off and it was the best summer I’ve ever had.

What advice would you give someone who wants a career as a singer and as an actress? Get involved in everything possible – dancing classes, drama school, summer schools, local ‘am dram’ etc. And you shouldn’t be in it for fame and fortune, you should do it because you’re passionate about it and love it.

Any other dreams left to fulfil? In this job you never know what’s coming up next. I am still learning as an actress and a singer. I would like to continue in the world of musical theatre but I would also one day like to release an album of my own as I still enjoy writing and recording. Who knows!
