Golden baubles, high-end fi nishes and metallic trees are all excellent ways to bring your Christmas decor into this century, embrace a modern colour palette and add sparkle using white, silver and gold. Wrap the tree in white feather-boa garlands, and fi ll in the gaps with feathery plumes that create the look of an early morning frost. Be careful, however, as white can visually fl atten out a room. Add textural interest by using a wide array of materials, such as crystal, glass and sparkling ornaments. Wrap packages in decorative handmade papers and put them in voile gift bags to form a blanket of white beneath the tree. Additionally, you can purchase white rugs for the room and even change your light bulbs and light shades to enhance the ‘white feel’. In addition imagine a contemporary table top with new tableware, textiles and accessories, a snow-white table top is a perfect back drop for your holiday table. Use favourite fl owers to add colour. Instead of poinsettias use white hydrangeas with silver and gold twigs in white vases to create a feel of winter wonderland.

A real Christmas tree will ensure a traditional look. Start by stringing it with white lights and add traditional red, green and gold accessories and bows. A simple evergreen Christmas tree can be put in the spotlight with big red and white ball ornaments. Take extra branches and use them to decorate outdoor railings and doors. Using twine, wire, and a shiny red bow tie them to banisters and stair rails, or lay them along the top of your fi replace mantel. You can arrange some red and gold Christmas balls with red silk roses on a platter, ensure it compliments your table cloth colour. Buy a wreath for the front door and personalise it using fresh or silk roses, to complete the look.
