Octavian in January, 1971 when I bought a 1962 Gibson hummingbird jumbo acoustic at Coulthart’s on Frank Street. I was looking for a guitar that could pass the ‘Pinball Wizard’ intro test, and the Hummingbird did just that. But it didn’t come cheap: $535 was a lot of money for a 21 year old kid in 1971.


“Since 1971, that Gibson Hummingbird has helped me to write, arrange or record pretty much every Octavian or Chain Reaction song. It has been to every party, rehearsal and Christmas celebration. It has been coast-to-coast across Canada with me several times. It has survived many war wounds. It even survived some really tough financial times in 1978 when I advertised it in The Ottawa Journal for only $200! Believe it or not, there were no takers (thank God). “Today it is still with me and


it still sounds and plays great. I have it fitted with a Rare Earth Humbucker acoustic pickup for live performances, which does the job nicely. What I also find really great and unique about this guitar is the adjustable bridge. “I own 11 guitars, but the Hummingbird has the longest history for me.”
