Motorcycle diary Riding the Tail of the Dragon
By JOHN ARMSTRONG When Brian Warren (Bounder publisher)
asked me to keep a diary of our motorcycle trip this year, I wasn’t sure how I was going to put it together. You see, the trip actually started in June,
2012, when John May, Don Killens and I rode from Ottawa down through the Finger Lakes region of New York, into Pennsylvania, and on to Front Royal Virginia to ride the Skyline and Blue Ridge Parkways. We rode the parkways as far as Roanoke
Virginia, but due to time restraints, we had to return home. Before we left Roanoke, we made a commitment to return in June 2013 to finish riding the complete Blue Ridge Parkway and to
take in some of the other famous roads in the area.
During the winter, we made plans to trailer
the bikes as far as Roanoke and then head out to finish the ride we started in 2012. While I’m not a fan of trailering a motorcycle, it made sense to get down to the area fast so we could spend more time riding in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.
Day 1 – Sunday, June 9 John, Don, new recruit, Jan Wentzel and I left Ottawa at 5:30 am. We headed towards Roanoke, Virginia with the bikes loaded on the trailer. After an 11-hour drive down I-81, we pulled into to storage compound, unloaded, and headed to our hotel in downtown Roanoke.
