TRUE BREW
JEFF O’REILLY Musically Inspired Beer Music and beer are always enjoyable
on their own, but when they are combined together, they are so complimentary that the results are almost always outstanding. From adding spirit and volume to a
team cheer or sing-along, confidence in awkward social situations, removing fear in battle and inhibition on the dance floor, these allies just seem to work together perfectly. Let’s take a look at some recent
musically-inspired beer collaborations.
AC/DC Premium Lager (Brasserie Licorne SAS France 5.0% ABV; The Beer Store $2.55 500ml can) AC/DC is one of the biggest and
loudest groups of all-time, selling more than 200 million albums worldwide since 1973, and considered one of the most popular touring acts of all time. But in a world where “the guitar man
got famous, and the businessman got rich”, taking the band that brought us Have A Drink On Me and creating a beer for their huge and loyal predominantly- male following seems like a stroke of
marketing genius. But this beer has me wondering: “Who Made Whom?” With a website promoting an Australian
band’s beer as a true German Pilsner, while my can clearly shows it has been brewed in France, I am skeptical. But I must proceed bravely in the name of research. With a great-looking iconic logo on
the can, the liquid pours a crystal clear pale gold with a big bright white head that disappears quickly. Aromas of grainy cereal malts, hay/straw/grass with hints of corn, lemon and light floral hopping, the beer itself tastes clean with a light lemongrass sweetness up front and a very subtle bitterness at the end. Light-bodied with loads of carbonation,
slightly astringent with a soft unassuming finish, it is an easy drinker with no pretense of being anything other than that. While expecting something bombastic (as that seems to be the direction many beers are going these days) this very approachable lager is a lot like AC/DC’s music − simple, straightforward, and familiar: If you want beer, you’ve got it.
