ADVOCACY

Horsham Rural City Council has worked hard on a wide number of advocacy issues on behalf of the Horsham and wider Wimmera and Southern Mallee communities this year.

Our Councillors consider the current most important local advocacy issue with the State Government is the redevelopment of Horsham College. We have taken every opportunity to raise this issue with all visiting Ministers and Senior Public Servants from the State Government, together with any visiting Opposition Members. The Mayor has raised the Horsham College issue directly with the Premier and other Senior Ministers. Council continues to work with the local community to ensure that this issue receives a high priority.

As part of Council’s continual effort to improve customer service, a new streamlined and easy to use website was launched in early 2013. Following months of co-ordinated effort, the redevelopment better reflects the needs of our diverse municipality.

Together with the fresh and vibrant new design, we’ve added new features such as Quick Links, providing users with a more reliable navigation that allows the reader to check information on a weekly basis whether it is up-to-date road works or public notices.

The new platform looks a little different and will enable us to roll out some great services in the future, but the same great content is there.

We still have work to do and the site will continue to be updated regularly with the latest news and informative content. Council will monitor the new changes to make sure visitors find the new site as easy and intuitive to use as it has been designed to be.

As part of our role in the regional community and through the Wimmera Development Association, Horsham has worked actively to promote regional issues such as better weather forecasting, duplication of the Western Highway to Stawell and improved mobile phone coverage across the region.

We have taken these opportunities through the Australian Local Government Association Conference in Canberra and to appropriate Commonwealth and State Government Ministers and Members of the Opposition. Council will be taking these issues up with the candidates for the Federal Election being held in September.

Council has also built upon its work on advocating for the future development of Longerenong College following on from the successful action of the Bayer Research Company to Longerenong. Council has been advocating for improved accommodation facilities and was pleased to note that the Victorian State Government has committed to this project and we will be looking towards the Commonwealth Government to fund a substantial component.
