EMMA ELTRINGHAM – Technical Services Department

TERTIARY STUDENTS

One of the commitments in the Council Plan is to “Continue to participate in cadetship/scholarship programs”. Horsham Rural City Council encourages tertiary students to complete their work placements with us. These placements give students hands on experience in their chosen profession in an environment where they are supported by experienced Council staff. During the past year, we welcomed several tertiary students to Horsham Rural City Council. Here’s what some of them had to say about their time at Horsham Rural City Council.

ANGELA PLAZZER – Planning Department

I am currently studying the Bachelor of Environments majoring in Civil and Geomatic Engineering at the University of Melbourne. During my eight week placement in the Technical Services Department I have been very fortunate to gain valuable experience in a range of engineering projects. I have had the opportunity to carry out a number of tasks which have enabled me to use and build on the skills I have gained during the past three years at university.

I highly recommend to other students to take part in opportunities like this during their semester break. It gives you a greater insight into the professional workplace and allows you to gain a sound understanding of your chosen career path.

(Emma was employed on an eight week placement in the Technical Services Department in January/ February 2013. She is completing her final year of study in 2013)

32 ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - 2013

Before I started my internship as a Student Planning Officer at Horsham Rural City Council, I was unsure of the tasks that lay ahead of me. My friends said that an internship consists of photocopying and making coffee for my superiors. So, it was a pleasant surprise that Brodie, Adam and Edwin (from the Planning Department) had prepared some challenging work for me that is also pertinent to my university course.

Aside from being Brodie’s shadow at meetings, he taught me how to assess a planning permit application and I accompanied him on a site visit to Natimuk. As part of my strategic planning work with Edwin, I wrote a report for the Planning Committee and a schedule for a zone. However, the task that occupied most of my time was gathering data to be used for the Central Activity District strategy.

The six weeks I spent in the Planning Department have been enjoyable and I am grateful to Horsham Rural City Council for giving me the opportunity to gain an insight into my future career and the inner workings of my own local government.

(Angela is completing the Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning at La Trobe University, Bendigo Campus. She was employed as a Student Planning Officer for six weeks in January/February 2013)
