CGOAL 1OMMUNITY AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Enhance the development of Horsham and surrounding areas as a diverse, inclusive and vibrant community

DOCUMENTARY For the last 75 years, the Horsham Town Hall has been the social hub for the Wimmera community. Communities have gathered for numerous social events throughout the decades including debutante balls, rock concerts, classical music recitals, ballroom dancing and art shows.

As a way of celebrating the Town Hall as a caretaker of community memories, Horsham Rural City Council commissioned regional filmmakers and local producers to create a social documentary entitled “Horsham Town Hall – 75 Years of Memories” to capture the spirit and history of the Town Hall through the memories of its patrons.

Supported by funding through the Australian Government’s Your Community Heritage Program, filmmakers interviewed over 30 people producing a documentary that shows a wonderful cross-section of the Wimmera community, with memories and anecdotes that span its 75 years.

A highlight of the documentary was the capturing of a High Tea and Dancing event held in October 2012. Patrons enjoyed a sumptuous afternoon tea, whilst local dance groups and musicians delighted and engaged them, followed by audience participation through dancing.

The “Horsham Town Hall – 75 Years of Memories” double DVD was launched in December 2012 with screenings held at two events in the Wesley Performing Arts Centre attended by approximately 200 people.

The Horsham Centenary Ball was held at the Horsham Town hall in 1950 - just one of the memories captured on the social documentary
