MAINTAINING OUR ASSETS

GOAL 3

Provide new infrastructure and renewal maintenance in line with community and service needs

SKATE PARK The Stage 2 Street Section of the Horsham Youth Park Enterprise Skate Park was completed in October 2012 at a total cost of $131,017. This ‘Street Section’ of the skate park was designed to accommodate younger or less experienced users and includes stairs, rails, smaller jumps and a quarter pipe. To ensure it was appropriate, regular users of the park were consulted on the design which has created a great sense of pride and ownership among all users. Funding for Stage 2 was provided from a Community Facility Funding Program Grant of $60,000 from the Department of Planning and Community Development with the balance being funded by Council.

Stage 2 was officially opened by the Mayor, Cr David Grimble on 4 May 2013. The event included a Skate, BMX and Scooter competition, jointly organised by Nexus and Horsham Rural City Council, in conjunction with skate park users. Competitors, ranging in age from four years to 20 plus years, travelled from Stawell, Ararat and Portland to participate. There were also many spectators and non-competitors who enjoyed skating at the park during breaks.

Another highlight for the Horsham Youth Park Enterprise Skate Park has been a series of photographic workshops conducted at the park by Horsham Regional Art Gallery’s Debbie Moar and photographer Melissa Powell in January this year. Images were included in the “Wimmera Parklife” Exhibition at the Horsham Regional Art Gallery which ran from February through to April 2013.
