Play Time

Help your child to appreciate nature. Have a bird feeder outside a window. Keep it filled with birdseed. Examine a fallen nest closely and marvel at the feat of weaving.

If you live near a farm, ask if you can see the cows being milked or sheep sheared.

A nature trail is more involving than a simple walk. Decide beforehand what you expect to see and make a game of ticking the items off a clipboard, to encourage observation and concentration.

Your child might predict seeing a mole hill, oak tree, snail, beetle, butterfly, fir cone, ant, yellow flower, blackbird, spider’s web, smooth stone, fluffy cloud, rainbow, caterpillar, etc. Always discuss what you see in detail, such as various types of cloud.

Also play animal detectives. Look for tracks, nests, gnawed bark (rabbits/ deer), and broken snail shells (thrushes). Look under leaf mould for centipedes and woodlice.
