ruth be told, I’m a creature of habit. As much as I love the summertime festivities, by September, I am craving the structure and routines that the begin-
ning of the school year brings. Instead of a rut, routine can bring renewed energy and comfort, enhanced by the return of crisp autumn air. Taking care of ourselves once again becomes a priority. Truly restful time off is highly beneficial. Yet I’m sure we’ve all returned from an adventure-packed trip only to feel like we need a vaca- tion after your vacation. That is how I usually feel by the end of summer, having tried to fit in too much. This month’s issue focuses on fitness, with a special nod to National Yoga
Month. Fall is a perfect time to return to a favorite exercise routine or branch out and try something new to us. We’ve included a special section highlighting some of the best places to work out in our area, starting on page 16. I’m always changing up my own exercise routine to keep things interesting. A few weeks ago, I tried TRX Training, which utilizes a suspension system leveraging a person’s body weight while building strength. Afterwards, I felt muscles I didn’t even know I had. Pilates Reformer Training is another efficient workout system for those that want to cross train to stay in the game. Of course, for those that feel the need of a fitness boost, boot camp intensives can deliver amazing results. Amy Vetter and Kari Carpenter, of Drishtiq Yoga, in Mason, introduce us to different types of yoga in their article, “Finding Your Yoga Fit.” Variations of the practice have been active for centuries with good reason, affording benefits to body, mind and spirit. I encourage everyone to give it a try; sticking with it comes with finding the best style for our body type and personality. Regular practice routinely brings a powerful calming effect as you build strength and increase flex- ibility.
While the weather is still beautiful, I encourage you to take a few days off for a leisurely pedal along Cincinnati’s wonderful bike trails, which are among the most picturesque in America. Loveland is at the heart of the action, dotted with perfect spots to park your bike and rest up while enjoying a healthy bite to eat. Kayaking along the Little Miami River is also another change-of-pace option. Grab a few friends or make it a family affair. One way or another, it feels good to build fitness into our everyday schedule.
In health and happiness, Carol Stegman, Publisher
