Evolving Physical Therapy and Athletic Performance

by Amanda Merritt Eric Oliver “P

ain is inevitable. Suffering is optional,” said Haruki Mu- rakami, author of What I Talk

About When I Talk About Running, and any runner knows that occasional pain truly is inevitable. Our bodies allow us to do miraculous things, including run- ning mile upon mile and participating in hours of intense athletic activity. It is no surprise when athletes encounter an occasional bump or bruise along the way, running into that inevitable pain. But suffering from that pain is optional, as the proper treatment can get an ath- lete back on-track in a new and even healthier way. Beyond Exercise, a physical ther-

apy and athlete performance center in Cincinnati, specializes in working with sports injuries and back/neck pain, in an attempt to keep athletes healthy and to return them to their usual athletic activities.

Eric Oliver, a physical therapist of

almost 12 years and owner of Beyond Exercise, LLC, was drawn to physical therapy by his passion for athletics and an interest in ‘fixing’ the human body when it was broken. Oliver explains, “I love understanding how the various systems of the body work together to create every day and athletic move- ments. Problem solving on how to alleviate pain and improve function is fun. Sleuthing to figure out these problems is challenging, and I enjoy challenges.” Oliver understands the impor- tance of the need to be very proficient

in recognizing key markers of various diagnoses. In addition to his continued clinical education, Oliver also became a certified running coach through the Road Runner’s Club of America and USA Track & Field to further his skills so he can work knowledgeably with endurance athletes. Beyond Exercise is a fee-for-service

physical therapy clinic which means clients pay for their services themselves. This ensures that physical therapy services are structured around each individual’s needs without interfer- ence from insurance policy mandates and restrictions. This clinic’s business model is becoming the industry norm and allows therapists more time and focused attention serving clients. Oliver noted patients that get more time with their therapist not only learn more, but also get more for their time invest- ment. Patients can still submit receipts themselves for reimbursement from their insurance company, but Beyond Exercise does not get involved in the process.

An enthusiastic Oliver exclaimed, “I am excited to be part of the evolution of the physical therapy industry and the wellness industry. Without having to worry about insurance pre-approvals and their processes, I can focus on what matters most-- my client’s needs.” Beyond Exercise provides indi- vidualized treatment and consultation sessions in 30 to 60 minute time blocks with a therapist, allowing the therapist to focus on the problem, treat it, and

teach the client effective strategies to manage not just their symptoms, but also the underlying dysfunction. Oliver adds, “We don’t just put a bandage on the symptoms.” With a specialty in working with

endurance athletes ranging from rec- reational runners to elite level runners, triathletes and even Olympic hopefuls, Beyond Exercise caters to the running community by providing educational workshops on running topics, such as running mechanics and injury preven- tion. They also have one of only two AlterG Anti-gravity Treadmills in the region-- a treadmill that facilitates reduced impact running. It is used for rehab and performance enhancement and can be found in various profession- al and Olympic training centers. Oliver notes, “We take pride in our mission to better the lives of our running commu- nity in Hyde Park and beyond.” Since early 2011, Beyond Exer- cise, has been putting athletes back on the roads, tracks and fields, by offer- ing individualized attention to clients through skilled and advanced care from knowledgeable therapists and fitness instructors.
