Aroma therapy following complaints

A FAULTY extractor fan at the composting plant in Blaise Farm Quarry has been causing a stink for residents in West Malling. Alan West, who is the parish

council’s representative on the New Earth Solutions liaison committee, said he had re- ceived around 20 complaints that the smell of rotting com- post had been wafting into the New Town area by the prevail- ing westerly wind. Affected roads included Norman Road, Fartherwell Avenue and Alma Road. New Earth Solutions’ market-

ing manager Rachel Surbuts said: “We discovered that the extraction fan system was not operating at its maximum and have put into place an upgrade, which is ongoing. “We hope this will improve the situation dramatically. We

will assess the situation and ac- tion further improvements if needed.” MrWest said: “New Earth So-

lutions did some odour elimi- nation work in the summer but the problem has got worse since then. It seems to be a smell of rotting compost. It’s quite a sweet smell, not obnoxious, but quite persistent and annoying. “This has been raised with

KCC, who granted planning permission for the composting plant, but they say the smell was not a planning condition and that the Environment Agency should deal with it. The next step would be for people to complain to them. “A lot of people support what they’re doing on the site – they think it’s the right idea – but people shouldn’t have to put up with the smell of rotting com- post.”

Charity benefits from parking

CHRISTMAS shoppers in Maidstone will find extra weekend park- ing spaces thanks to the Rotary Club of Maidstone. Town centre businesses are allowing charity parking in lower Earl

Street (opposite the car entrance to FremlinWalk), Mote Road (with a pedestrian exit to Romney Place opposite Mall/ Chequers) and solicitors Kennedys (opposite Ford main dealers Haynes in Ash- ford Road). These parks are available on all Saturdays before Christmas, from

8.30 to 7pm, and on Sunday December 10, from 9.30 to 5pm. Rotarians, wearing distinctive yellow tabards, will be helped by

other local Rotary clubs, Scouts and members of the Inner Wheel Club. Parkers are requested to make a donation to local charities.
