Town Talk alk Height of achievement for charity trekkers

THE group of young people who trekked the world-famous Inca Trail in Peru had a “great time and a lot of fun”. Town Talk has previously reported

that Lawrence Smart, of Roman Road, Paul Webster, of Cox’s Close, Snod- land, Simon Angel and KatieWonna- cott, of Leybourne, and Jessica Waghorn, of College Road, Maidstone, took on the task to raise funds for Kent Kids Miles of Smiles, a Canter- bury-based charity for sick and dis- abled children. David Webster was unable to make

the trip. They each received a certificate

which read that they had “survived ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’, 13,776 feet above sea level and successfully com- pleted the 45km, four day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu in one piece.” “It was amazing and really hard work,” said Lawrence. “The Incas were very small people and the steps were huge, I don’t know how they managed to walk them.” He said the trip cost £2,000 each, which had to come out of his pocket, and “for that sort of experience it was well worth it”. He has until March to collect all his sponsorship money which he hopes will amount to £3,000. A self-employed painter and deco-

rator, Lawrence added that he would like to do something similar again and is also looking at voluntary proj- ects.
