June 21 – July 11 Wild at Art Exhibition Marle Place Gardens, Brenchley
A group of talented artists using natural and locally gleaned materials, guided by Lucy Williams, display their innovative and highly individual pieces. The group will be in the gallery some of the time to talk and demonstrate their work. 10am to 5pm, every day, apart from Thursdays.
June 28 In Austen Family Footsteps Tonbridge Town Centre
A guided circular walk through Tonbridge in the footsteps of the Austen family. In the 18th century, Tonbridge was a market town dominated by a Norman Castle. The High Street was part of the second most important road in Kent, linking London to Tunbridge Wells and to the Sussex coast. Jane’s father, George, was born in Tonbridge in 1731 and there are many family links to the town. Take the walk and learn more about the family. Booking Information: 01732 770929
June 30 Armed Forces Day 2012 Folkestone Town Centre, Folkestone
Starting at 12pm, this free event for families and communities celebrates our Armed Forces – past present and future – with live performances and static displays. The open air event will take place at the Leas Bandstand, Folkestone.
June 30 - July 1 WW1 Event Kent & East Sussex Railway, Tenterden
On July 1, 96 years to the day since troops were massed in the South East before being sent to fight in the first few days of the Battle of the Somme, The Great War extravaganza will feature over 50 living historians in appropriate military and civilian costume. Authentic equipment at the station will include a General
Service Wagon, Lewis machine gun cart, water cart, dispatch rider motorcycle, recruitment tent and bell tent encampment. Visitors can also take advantage of a full steam train service and enjoy a ride in one of the restored vintage carriages to Bodiam and visit the Cavell Van, an important railway legacy of the Great War era. Visitors can read about nurse Edith Cavell, captain Charles Fryatt and the Unknown Warrior as well as watch newsreels with footage from the British Pathé film archive showing scenes of the trenches.
