Town profile Whilst in the vicinity of the River Medway, you could

stop for an al fresco aperitif or on-board lunch at The Barge, Maidstone’s floating restaurant – or maybe take a trip along the river itself and see the town from a whole new perspective.

Green Leaf

Leisure is due to launch three solar –powered boats for hire from the esplanade adjacent to The Barge in early Summer, while The Kentish Lady Cruises run

hourly trips at the weekend and during school holidays from April to September from Bishop’s Way.

Following the Medway out to the west, you will see the impressive new Library and County Archive ahead, as well as the town’s new football stadium and the headquarters of Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club, which has a large membership of all ages.

If you bear left and take a stroll across the Millennium Bridge and through Whatman Park, you might stumble across a travelling theatre group or musicians at the amphitheatre….or an art display along the riverbank. The park has a woodland meadow, a nature reserve and a children’s play area, as well as a skate park.

During a long weekend in Maidstone, there is plenty

of time to sample everything the town has to offer – whether it be history, culture, arts and entertainment, watersports and leisure, eating and drinking – or simply chilling out, relaxing and shopping.

Since the opening of Fremlin Walk, Maidstone shopping centre can compete with any of the county’s other retail centres again, with small independents offering quirky and unusual gifts to major high street names with the latest in fashion, furniture, furnishings and food.

Fremlin Walk itself has 45 outlets, while the Chequers Mall has a further 60. Small independents abound near The Corn Exchange, in Market Buildings, Union Street and Gabriel’s Hill.

The town has won accolades for its night life, with

a range of alcohol and safety initiatives helping to ensure the safety of late-night revellers at its many pubs and clubs.

Two of these are about to re-open at Lockmeadow, where there is also an eight- screen cinema, Frankie & Benny’s American-style diner, as well as the David Lloyd leisure centre. Lockmeadow is also the historic home of Maidstone market, which takes place on Tuesday and Saturday mornings and a great place to snap up a bargain!
