Welcome
A genuine look at summer in Kent
TONY Blair was perhaps the first high-profile politician to tap into the popularity of sport.
As the Prime Minister in waiting, he was famously captured playing head tennis with former England manager Kevin Keegan.
This could be seen as either a man refreshingly in touch with the passions of the majority, or as a ploy to curry political favour among voters.
Either way, the subsequent electoral success of Mr Blair is likely to be a big reason for so many politicians of the modern era (so a cynic would say) manufacturing their interest in sport by listing favourite football teams and fawning over sporting celebrities.
However, in the case of Tracey Crouch, the Chatham and Aylesford MP since 2010, our interview on page four illustrates a genuine enthusiasm for sport that is far removed from the pretenders among her peers.
Like many of us, she will be relishing the start of the London Olympics, which looms tantalisingly close. Our Town Profile (page 11) is on Maidstone, which will be a stop-off point on the Olympic torch relay on July 19, before visiting the town centre the following morning. These are exciting times for the county town, with a new pedestrianised square and a recently extended museum.
Elsewhere, we have features on Kent Life (page 17), Riverhill Gardens (page 20), a new book dedicated to dog walks in the county (page 21) and much more to help you make the most of summer in Kent.
