Coach of the Year Gustavo Castaño In 2012 Gustavo was the coach of the


Open Quebec Provincial Team, Hydro. Starting their try outs in late winter, the team was built on the values of team synergie, respect for their teammates and their opponent and always playing with


Spirit of the Game. This first year team had only a short time to come together and learn to play as a team. Through training and dedication and a coach that lead the team through the skills and fitness to become competitors, they continued to rely on their core values to ensure their success. At the 2012 CUC, Hydro made it all the way to the finals under Gustavo’s leadership. They played a hard fought game and had earned them respect from the opponents they played along the way. Their second place finish at CUC in their inaugural year was certainly the result

Mauro Oritz Mauro regularly contributes to


Vancouver Ultimate League clinics volunteering his time to teach new aspiring players the fundamentals of ultimate. He also organises his own personal throwing clinics outside of the official VUL ones. His dedication to the sport of Ultimate since moving to Vancouver from Venezuela is almost un- paralleled. He came to this country without money and very little English but a passion for Ultimate. Through this passion for ultimate he found a way to make a living in this country and start a new life. He is famous for selling Furious merchandise out of his basement and at VUL functions in order to survive. His hard work off the field translated to the Ultimate

of the leadership and guidance Gustavo exhibited. Taking on a group of youth and guiding them to play at the highest level while being able to maintain respect and sportsmanship is truly a fantastic accomplishment.


2012 CDN National Masters Title in the Nomads home city of Victoria. Despite all this he has still found


time to raise his 3 young girls and still volunteers his time at VUL clinics. Outside of his 2012 success, his list of competitive Ultimate accomplishments is long: • 2004, 2008 World Champion in the Open division • Multiple CDN National Champion in both the Open (00,03, 04, 05, 07) and Masters Divisions (11, 12) • USA Champion 2003 and 2005 In October 2010 he finally became


field as he won multiple World, CDN and USAU titles. In 2011 Mauro returned from retirement


to lead Nomads to a 2011 CDN National Masters Title. This past year he was the primary cog playing a pivotal role on the Canadian masters team that won Gold in Japan @ WUGC 2012. To cap off his summer, he returned home to win the

a Canadian Citizen, one of his greatest accomplishments. He is a true Canadian and his story is a special one.
