National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Update!

COMMUNITY INITIATION CONTEXT Ultimate Canada officially launched a

National Coaching Certification Program for the community-initiation context in 2012. To date the program has trained over 250 coaches in 20 clinics. The program is truly a national one, with at least 1 clinic being run in every province! Are you interested in running a clinic

in your community? If so, please contact your local coaching contact: https:// canadianultimate.com/index.php/en/ about-uc/1/196

The community initiation context is designed for coaches working with elementary, middle school and non- competitive high school programs.

COMPETITION INTRODUCTION CONTEXT The first competition stream pilot was held in Ottawa in February 2013, with a second pilot scheduled for Vancouver in May. Ultimate Canada is excited to be working with UltiCoach in the development of resources to support

Calibrating for Colombia On July 28th , thirteen of Canada’s top

Ultimate players will be cleating up for their first game at the World Games in Cali, Colombia. Although the final roster has yet to be released by Team Canada coach, Jeff Cruickshank, the names will surely be ones you’ve heard of before. Last fall, Cruickshank evaluated play-

ers from across the country in order to put together what he thought would get Canada back to the top of the World’s podium. Nineteen players, nine women and ten men, were selected for the national team program and thirteen of those players will be selected for the final roster. The players selected bring a wealth of experi- ence and knowledge, each having repre- sented Canada on the international stage at least once before. Canada earned a bid to the 2013 World

Games following successful results in all divisions at the recent World Ultimate and Guts Championship in Sakai, Japan. The World Games are considered the most prestigious competition for Ultimate as only six countries qualify for the event. Canada will compete against Australia, Colombia, Great Britain, Japan and the USA over three days (July 28 – 30, 2013) at

this multi-sport event. To prepare for the season, players began

training in their respective cities and communicating as a group online. Nick Menzies and Morgan Hibbert sent out pump-up emails while Caroline Cadotte provided her personal training tips. In February, Anne Mercier ran a mini-camp

this context. UltiCoach is one of our coaching sponsors and UC will be using customized Ulticards and Ultipads to teach skills and drill in this program. The program is expected to launch in 2014. The competition introduction context is designed for competitive high school and junior programs.

scores each chance they had. Mark Lloyd and Cam Harris demonstrated their on-field connection as they scored points off of big hucks – a connection that helped TC (mixed) earn a gold medal last summer in Japan. We watched layout bids from Candice Chan, big grabs from Jeff Lindquist and skilled handling from Adrian Yearwood. In between drills and scrimmages players checked the scores for the team’s NCAA pool started by Gonzaga fan Andy Collins. Others, like Darcy Drummond, worked on throws while Anatoly Vasilyev and Matt Berezan won some sky battles. Off the field, the team took in a Raptors game and several meals

in Ottawa and Coach Cruickshank held one in Vancouver to bring players together and practise team strategies. In March, the team met in person

for the first time for a training camp in Toronto. Over the course of the weekend we learned each other’s style of play, favourite throws and cuts, and created new connections. Players like Kira Frew and I worked at re-connecting having played on Team Canada together in 2004 and 2011. The team witnessed Catherine Hui and Mira Donaldson taking control of the lanes, catching or throwing for

at Aaron Loach’s family home. It was a much-needed opportunity to connect as a team, develop creative handshakes and work on our French. The camp left us energized and motivated for the coming months. Next on the schedule is a trip to

Kelowna, home of team member Ashlee Davidson, for our second training camp. Final roster decisions will be made following this tournament yet the entire team will travel and compete at Poultry Days (Versailles, Ohio) in June and Potlatch (Seattle, Washington) in July.
