Team Canada Women U23 Spring Update BY STEPHANIE CHOW

The U23 Women’s Team Canada has begun preparations and is excited to have the opportunity to represent Canada on home soil at the WFDF U23 World Championships in Toronto this July. Both East and West tryouts in the Fall of 2012 were extremely competitive, with over 100 women applying for spots on the women’s and co-ed squads. Assistant Coaches Kaitlyn Lovatt and Carla DiFilippo bring a wealth of extensive competitive international & coaching experience (Capitals and Team Canada 2012). Sports Psychologist, Dr. John Gotwals (Lakehead University) and Strength & Conditioning Coach Mike Aizawa (Razor Fitness, Vancouver Nighthawks) have also been lending their

expertise in our pre-season preparations. We will first hit the field together for

our training camp in Vancouver on May 11–13, where we will be finalizing the team concepts that we’ve been working through in our online meet-ups over the winter and spring. We will be attending Oregon’s Solstice tournament in late June, where our game will be tested against the northwest women’s club teams. Regional U23 teams will also be attending Flowerbowl (Vancouver, BC) and Jazzfest (Montreal, QC). The Canadian Women’s team is not

unfamiliar to international competition with many of our players bringing prior WJUC and U23 experience. Over half of our roster currently plays at the University level, and are currently competing in the highly regarded USAU

Collegiate Series on UBC, UVic and University of Ottawa. The level of play at this year’s U23 World Championships will be a step up from the tournament in 2010, with USA Ultimate sending an inaugural team, and with the rise of Colombian Ultimate and other European women’s programs. As a team, we bring a lot of drive, skill and athleticism and we know that the keys to our success will be maximizing our talent, and being prepared to play with poise under pressure. We have a fun and infectious energy on the field and are looking to share that with our international counterparts who may be visiting Canada for the first time. We know that we represent the future of women’s Ultimate in Canada and will wear the maple leaf with pride!
