CUC is returning to Vancouver for the 5th time!

Though we’ve hosted before, in many

ways this will be the first event of its kind held in one of the hottest Ultimate markets in Canada. Starting in 2013 Ultimate Canada has expanded CUC to a 7 day event, scheduling the Junior Divisions (Boys and Girls) on Aug 12-14, while the Senior Event will run over the traditional Thursday to Sunday timeframe on Aug 15 to 18. For the Juniors, not only will this allow

for a possible expansion of teams from 8 per division to 10 or 12, it gives the organizers and Ultimate Canada the chance to showcase the finals for both playing divisions. Up until now, Junior finals have been “lost” on Saturday afternoons while most participants have been in playoffs of their own, or playing out placement games. In 2013 the two Junior Finals will take place on Wednesday Evening at the 3500 Seat Thunderbird Stadium. With all other Junior teams having finished their games prior to the finals, the Senior teams coming into Vancouver for their games on Thursday and the Vancouver Ultimate Community to draw on for spectators, we are hoping to get the largest crowd ever to witness the CUC Junior Finals. Could we have a repeat of the 5000 fans who packed T-Bird Stadium and the surrounding field for the 2008 WUGC Open Finals? Time will tell, but it should be an exciting and memorable event for the players and spectators alike. Moving onto the Senior event, Ultimate

Canada has followed the successful introduction of Masters Women to 2012 WUGC by adding that division to CUC. Both Masters Finals (Open and Women) will go Saturday Night, again at Thunderbird Stadium. Open, Mixed and Women Finals will take place on Sunday as usual. In both cases we are expecting big crowds of players and fans to cheer on the National Championships. For the entire week

the University of British Columbia will play host to the best players from across the Nation. All

accommodations will be on site, and with food plans available from UBC Catering players won’t need to rely on rental cars or shuttle buses to get

them between hotels and fields.

The fields themselves

are also at a single location so players will be plenty of ability to watch other games

during the day. Overall, the

event is larger, but players will see a more intimate and accessible tournament in 2013 than ever before. And to cap it all off the plans for the

Social Event on Aug 17 are well under way. Taking place a 10 min shuttle bus

ride from UBC, the indoor/outdoor event will take place on the banks of the Fraser River overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With the sun setting over Vancouver Island players will be able to opt in for a unique dinner provided by the Musqueam Band, featuring traditional fare, including fresh caught Salmon and Crab. The party will feature a variety of musical acts inside the Musqueam Cultural Centre, and a variety of fun activities outside in the surrounding areas. All in all the Social Event, and in fact the tournament as a whole, is certain to be an unbeatable experience for players and guests alike. We hope to see you on the West Coast this summer.
