Golf W
hether you are a seasoned golfer or a novice ventur- ing onto the fairways for the fi rst time, if you like your sporting challenges framed with a beautiful view and
polished off with a dose of quality hospitality, there is no better place to tee off than Scotland, the home of golf. Courses in the West Highlands vary from characterful commu- nity greens to the world class, and have consistently attracted high calibre players from professionals like Jack Nicklaus, to stars including Robbie Williams, Hugh Grant, and even Prince Andrew. Golf is thought to have evolved in Scotland in the Middle Ages, and though the technology and skills may have developed since then, play a round here and you still get a sense of what compelled our ancestors – not only are all west coast courses different, many, especially those with proximity to the sea, play differently every day. The links course at Machrihanish, near Campbeltown, where the Mull of Kintyre looms over the sea, is celebrated for its world class golf, especially a remarkable fi rst hole, while the neighbouring Machrihanish Dunes has been developed recent- ly with conservation in mind – lawn-mowing here is done by a team of black Hebridean sheep.

Traigh, at Arisaig, near Malaig, is also beautifully situated, with a scenic fi fth shot with a view of the islands Skye, Eigg and Rum. The Machrie on Islay, which hosted the 1901 Open Championship, offers an exceptional golfi ng experience, and if you develop a taste for island golfi ng, there are other nine-hole courses with panoramic views on Mull, Tiree, Colonsay and Gigha. There’s plenty of choice for the golfer wherever you are on the main- land. In Oban, head for James Braid’s hilly Glencruitten Golf Club (with a Roman fort at the fourth hole) or enjoy peace and luxury while brushing up on your skills at the driving range and course at the exclusive Isle of Eriska Hotel. With golf a popular activity for locals as well as visitors, most towns, and many villages, including Taynuilt and Dalmally, have their own charming courses. Much of the attraction lies in the setting. When the backdrop to your game varies from rolling countryside to wide open ocean or the foot of mountain, sometimes within the space of nine holes, it’s no wonder so many visitors return to tackle another round.
