Benmore Botanic Garden
In its magnifi cent mountainside setting, Benmore Botanic Garden is one of Scotland’s prime botani- cal gems, steeped in history and surrounded by some of Argyll’s most breathtaking scenery. A delight for all the family, Ben- more welcomes visitors through an avenue of Giant Redwoods which arguably creates one of the grandest entrances to any botanic garden in the world. The Redwood Avenue will be 150 years old this year. From the serenity of the Formal Garden the energetic can enjoy the ascent through 120 acres of exotic plantings, from the Orient and the Himalaya to North and South America, reaching a dra- matic viewpoint at 450ft. The restored Victorian Fernery is one of the fi nest in Britain. It is a unique building in a remarkable setting on a steep hillside. It has
been identifi ed as an ideal site for the cultivation of the Killarney Fern, one of Britain’s rarest spe- cies. Audio guides are available for visitors who would like to learn more about the Garden and its work. Events and exhibitions – in the Courtyard Gallery – are run throughout the season and a warm welcome is extended to all who decide to enjoy a tasty lunch or light snack in the cafe. Any visit can be made complete by taking away a small memento from the shop and plant sales area, which support the important conserva- tion work of Benmore and the other three Gardens of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
