Island Hopping

Introducing our islands...

S

cotland’s islands are the jewel in its crown, a world re- moved from, and yet intimately connected with the main- land, and while they may have beautiful landscapes and

incredible wildlife in common, each has its own distinctive char- acter, from Tiree, Scotland’s sandy windsurfi ng capital, to Islay, its whisky metropolis, and the ornate Victorian resort of Bute. Puffi n-packed Staffa is one of many tiny treasures, while larger, far-fl ung destinations such as Barra (with a beach that doubles as an airstrip) Harris and Lewis offer modern facilities in a beau- tiful setting with a more leisurely pace of life. Arran is only short drive from Glasgow, yet provides such a breadth of experience that it has become known as Scotland in miniature. If you head to the Hebrides, even the journey will be an adven- ture, whether it begins by land, sea or sky, and while you can travel to each island individually, Caledonian MacBrayne ferries also offer a range of ‘hopscotch’ tickets that enable visitors to travel to several offshore ports of call. Your trip might begin with a ringside view of the geological won- ders of the Sound of Mull, on the scenic coast of Kintyre, or at the tip of the incredible Isle of Skye, but however you get to your island destination, the moment when you set foot on its shore is bound to be the fi rst of many magical ones.
