JUDGING A warm welcome from Singapore


A great work of WPO´s member, Packaging Council of Singapore and all its executive team.


uring its 89th and second WPO Board Meeting of 2012, held in Singapore from November 25th - 29th, some important decisions were taken aimed at the development of the Organisation as well as the development of the packaging industry around the world. One of the decisions was the approval of two new members: APO (African Packaging Organisation) and Indonesian Packaging Federation (IPF).

Regarding the WorldStar Award 2013, the 25 judges from all over the world evaluated 316 entries, from 33 countries. It was a record of entries! The category with more participants was Food (80 projects), followed by Beverage (78), Health & Beauty (33) and Pharmaceutical & Medical (23). The winners were announced in December 2012 and the Award Ceremony takes place in Sydney, Australia, 9 May 2013, during the first WPO Board Meeting. All winners can be seen at www.worldstar.org.


During the Singapore meeting a new WorldStar´s Award was created, Marketing – to recognize companies that really invested in packaging that demonstrates and understands brand value and that interacts with consumer. The winner will receive the Dogan Erberk Memorial Trophy in memory of WPO´s active member from Turkey that passed away

in the beginning of 2012.


WPO also discussed many education packaging programs to be accomplished by its members in 2013. The Executive Committee and the Education Committee are studying the proposals presented by the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), African Packaging Organisation (APO) and Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) to define the budget for education for 2013.


Besides the Board Meeting and the WorldStar judging, the participants of WPO meeting in Singapore had the opportunity of visiting SIMTech (Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology) whose mission is to develop high value manufacturing technology and human capital to enhance competitiveness of local manufacturing industry. The Institute works closely with multinational and local companies in the areas of electronics, semiconductor, precision engineering, medtech, aerospace, automotive, marine, logistics and other sector.


For the packaging area, they have two areas: the National RFID Center and the SMC (Sustainable Manufacturing Centre). The first one focuses on RFID adoption projects in both key industry verticals and public institutions strategic to the competitive advantage of Singapore. They also aim to inspire innovation of RFID technologies and applications.


The Sustainable Centre´s mission is to push the industry to develop and implement technologies for eco-performance


improvement in products and manufacturing processes. All to


minimize emission, waste


and toxicity in manufacturing and strengthen the global competitiveness of Singapore´s manufacturing industry.


Some WPO members also presented speeches at the World Packaging Conference; the main subject was “Innovative packaging for business sustainability”. Speakers from WPO were Thomas Schneider (President), Keith Pearson (General Secretary), Gordon Stewart (Vice President, Education), Luciana Pellegrino (Vice President, Marketing & Communication), Pierre Pienaar (member) and Soha Atallah (member). To complete the program, there was a visit to the Tiger brewery plant.


The top three countries taking awards were India with 28, United Kingdom with 13 and Japan with 12. Congratulations to all! A special thank you to those members who continue to promote and encourage entries into the WorldStar Awards. 


2014 WORLDSTAR AWARDS


The next WorldStar Awards are now open for entry and the judging is due to take place the week commencing 4 November 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. The entry closing date will be 27 September, 2013. www.worldstar.org
